Give your child the best start!

At Canadian Bilingual School, our early learning programs, from PreK to SK, provide positive experiences that support your child’s intellectual, social, emotional and physical development. Our foundational programs provide opportunities for students to engage in rich learning experiences through opportunities to explore, play, create and learn.

Learn

Play is how children make sense of the world and is an effective method of learning for young children. Ideas and skills become meaningful tools for learning that are practised in all areas of the curriculum. Students will become familiar with books, puppet play, rhyming songs, and games to build those early learning skills that will set them up for success in Kindergarten and Grade 1.

Students are taught in small groups to build on their listening and language skills. Opportunities for students to practice their skills throughout the day are provided in a variety of activity centers:

JK to SK Program

Building on the skills developed in the Pre-K program, students in JK and SK will take part in a more structured program that will provide large and small group instruction on key areas of the curriculum that builds on from year to year. The JK to SK program is a two-year continuum that gives students the time to develop the necessary skills to be successful in Grade 1. The focus is on students being involved in a literacy-rich environment where engaging children’s story books, rhymes, and songs are used to teach children important concepts of literacy development. Identifying letters and letter sounds, how letters make words, and how words make sentences are part of this evolving learning process. Their skills are enhanced through reading, writing, and speaking activities that further develop their language skills.

Our goals include

• Providing well-balanced programs that provide a strong English language program that supports learning across other subject areas
• Supporting children’s curiosity, exploration, and inquiry through opportunities for small group-based activities
• Supporting positive social and emotional skills where children learn to respect each other and learn and play together
• Encouraging children to enjoy learning and to use their imaginations
• Preparing young children with the skills, behaviors, and confidence necessary for success in later years

The following essential agreements guide the instruction:

Reading

  • • Students will be engaged in reading on a daily basis through shared, guided and independent reading opportunities.
  • • Reading instruction will be a balance of direct instruction, guided instruction, and instruction through shared reading.
  • • Students will develop skills in reading for information and understanding across the subject areas.

Writing

  • • Students will write daily in response to lessons and teachers will evaluate and provide authentic feedback that supports the students writing craft.
  • • Students will engage in lessons involving guided, shared and independent writing tasks.
  • • Students will use writing as a way of developing their ideas and expressing their opinions and responses to assigned tasks.

Speaking & Listening

  • • Students will communicate orally in standard English to express ideas and support opinions on a daily basis.
  • • Students will be engaged in classroom discussion and oral presentations to develop their speaking skills
  • • Students will develop their comprehension skills through inquiry accountable talk that develops their ability to answer question and ask questions.

Mathematics / Numeracy

Standards - AERO Language Curriculum (KG, Gr 1-8, Gr 9-10, Gr 11-12 )

CBS has adopted the AERO Language Curriculum. This curriculum focuses on 4 main areas of language: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. The strength of the AERO common curriculum is two-fold: it lies in both its conciseness of content and concepts, and its broad application of these ideas, allowing more time to work on and master the content and skills needed for effective and efficient use of language.

Standards - combination of ELECT expectations + Reggio Amelia approach

The Early Years Program at CBS addresses the social-emotional, physical, cognitive and language communication skills. Through a combination of play and direct instruction, students develop foundational skills in speaking, reading, writing and mathematical competencies. Using hands-on activity centers, our students learn about themselves and their world through playing with other children.

Standards - AERO Common Core Math Standards

CBS has adopted the recently released AERO Common Core Math Standards. The Common Core State Standards provide clear and consistent learning goals to help prepare students for college, career, and life. Emphasis in the AERO Math framework is on the processes and proficiencies of longstanding importance in mathematics at all levels.

Standards - NGSS Standards

CBS uses the AERO Science Framework that is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This framework puts great emphasis on the proper scientific steps and procedures used in all areas of science, and it structures its lessons to constantly bring these skills to the forefront. Science is broken down into “domains,” those being Life Science, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science, and Scientific Investigation. Each domain addresses both the knowledge and skills to understand the processes, content and scientific principles. In High School full-year courses in Biology and Chemistry are required for all students in Grades 9 and 10. Those students wishing to pursue deeper study in a branch of science may opt for elective courses in Chemistry, Physics and Biology offered in Grades 11 and 12.

Standards - AERO Common Core Social Studies Framework

CBS uses the AERO Common Core Social Studies Curriculum Framework revised in 2019. The focus on inquiry and questioning is key to learning, and by its nature, social studies promotes the use of questions throughout the learning process. These questions aid students in the exploration of the disciplines in relation to the standards and allow students to develop the habits of mind required of a social scientist.

Standards - BCIT Standards

CBS offers a number of full-year business-related courses, from introductory level to advanced level across Grades 10 to 12. The Business Department has adopted the standards and benchmarks of the BCIT (The Business, Computer, Accounting and Information Technology) Standards, developed in 2012, that describe what students should know and be able to do in the field of business education. Business education involves teaching students the fundamentals, theories, and processes of a business. By aligning our content and skills to these well-defined standards, CBS students receive a solid foundation in business fundamentals and accounting principles.

Standards - Kuwait Arabic Curriculum

CBS delivers the Arabic curriculum offered and prepared by the Ministry of Education in the State of Kuwait. The textbooks and curricula are based on standards and competencies to achieve practical and functional skills. These standards and competencies are relevant to the diverse needs and capabilities of learners and meet the requirements of the community and the labor market. The curriculum is supported with various activities and readings (integrated with Qatari curriculum standards) to enrich students' information and analytical abilities.

Standards - Kuwait Islamic Curriculum

CBS delivers the Islamic curriculum offered and prepared by the Ministry of Education in the State of Kuwait. The textbooks and curricula are based on standards and competencies to achieve the memorization and reading skills of the Holy Quran and also include the Character traits of the school, tied in with Islamic values.

Standards - Kuwait Social Studies Curriculum

CBS delivers the Kuwait Social Studies curriculum offered and prepared by the Ministry of Education in the State of Kuwait. The textbooks and curricula are based on standards and competencies to achieve the skills required of the subject.

Standards - Ontario Health and Massachusetts Health

Health is taught in conjunction with Science and PE at CBS from grades JK - 6. Standards and benchmarks are a combination of those from the Ontario Health Curriculum and the Massachusetts Department of Education Health Curriculum. The content addresses the needs of our students emotionally, physically, socially and culturally, keeping in mind the local traditions and beliefs of the people of the region, as well as opening the students’ minds to global concerns and universal concepts.

Standards - Ontario Physical Education Curriculum

Physical Education at CBS is tied into the KidFit program which begins in PreK and continues as a required course up through Grade 10. General movement exploration forms the bedrock of the Kindergarten and Elementary Physical Education curricula. Middle School builds on these fundamental skills and enhances team activities, game strategies, skills, and “lead-up” games based on major sports. Grades 9 and 10 work on honing the specific skills and strategies of major sports, as well as learning defensive tactics. For students in Grades 11 and 12, the Physical Education Department offers electives. From Kindergarten through High School, continual emphasis is placed on good sportsmanship, teamwork, cooperation, and safe use of equipment, as well as on the social and emotional development needed to become a good teammate and a gracious competitor.

Standards - ISTE Standards (TechnoKids Curriculum)

The IT Curriculum is guided by the 2016 International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards for Students by TechnoKids (which is aligned to Common Core standards). TechnoKids Technology Projects integrates technology into the curriculum across subject areas such as language arts, mathematics, social studies, visual arts, or science. At CBS, technology is integrated into the English subjects for Kindergarten using iPads / tablets. General computer classes are mandatory for Grades 1 to 8 and 10. IT electives are offered for Grades 11 and 12 which allow students to focus on the computer skills of their interest such as programming and graphic design. Technology skills are also integrated into other subjects from Grade 6 to 12 through the iPad program.

Standards - Ontario Art (1-8, 9, 11-12)

The Art Curricula focuses on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design that constitute all art creations. Students examine and analyze the elements and principles to appreciate and understand established works of art and the vast array of possibilities open to them when creating their own work. Art electives are offered for Grades 11 and 12 which give students deeper focus into the various art skills of their interest.
